Glittering lights in the shadow of the cathedral

This is how atmospheric Christmas time is in Mainz: against the historic backdrop of the 1000-year-old St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Mainz Christmas market shines with festively decorated stalls on the cathedral squares. The romantic Christmas village can be found on Fischtorplatz.

Carousels and handmade toys make children’s hearts beat faster on the cathedral squares.

The eleven-metre-high, richly decorated Christmas pyramid enchants visitors directly at the Höfchen, the main entrance to the market. Just a few steps further on, the hand-carved, life-size nativity figures in front of the Gotthard Chapel of St. Martin’s Cathedral are impressive. At the lower entrance to the market, 18 hand-carved angel figures leisurely make their rounds on the roof of the nine-meter-high music box.

• Official opening by Lord Mayor Nino Haase on Thursday, November 27 at 5 p.m.

The Mainz WinterZeit markets also bring a festive touch to various squares in the city center: You will find the markets on Schillerplatz, in the courtyard of the Electoral Palace, in the Hopfengarten and on the station forecourt.
