Vigil on the Book of Jonah – “Shall I not have pity?” (Jonah 4:11)
The Mainz Vigil is an Advent service in which candlelight, music, biblical readings and prayer create a special atmosphere. Inspired by ancient and Eastern church traditions, there are three nocturns in the middle section. This year, the book of Jonah is read in them.
It is the story of that unfortunate prophet who struggles with God’s mercy for sinners: Thus his role and mission seem superfluous or even wrong. The individual sections of the reading are deepened by the choir singing psalms and meditation songs together. The nocturnes are framed by an impressive celebration of light (lucernarium): The lighting of candles and the offering of incense merge with the prayers.
nnAfter the ceremony, the seminary invites you to a get-together with mulled wine and gingerbread. (Prof. Dr. Franz)
